Very interesting idea for a new system of XP is being discussed on the story games forums. The idea, originally posted by Adam Drew, suggests replacing the typical XP system in D&D type games with a different system. In many ways, it reminds me of achievements in video games.
You and the players come up with a list of categories. Adam suggests a couple like Violence and Magic. Then you list possibly actions that can be done to earn XP in those areas. After you adventure, you head back to town and can earn a different amount of XP depending on what the players feel are the areas that are most valuable. I don’t want to repeat the whole system here, so you should definitely go take a peek at it.
I liked it, mainly because it was a way to encourage story gaming using traditional systems. It’s sometimes hard to get players to play something other than D&D. Maybe this could be a gateway.
