Irredeemable volumes 1-3 by Mark Waid, Comic Book Review

Background

Irredeemable is a comic book written by Mark Waid and drawn by Peter Krause.  It features a Superman-like hero who has gone bad.  It focuses on the former allies and friends of the character, named The Plutonian, as they try to uncover what might have caused the hero to go bad.

As an aside, I think this could be a really interesting foundation to a RPG campaign, where there is a former friend of the PCs who has gone bad.  If a player leaves the group and agrees, this could be a really interesting story line for an established campaign with the GM using a former PC in the hero gone bad role.

Review

Liked: I like a lot about this series.  The characters are all interesting, and even though it’s kind of a team book like the Justice League, Mark Waid does a lot of great character development.  And it’s not just the Plutonian, but his former allies as well.  The artwork as well is very serviceable.  I would never describe it as the best artwork that I’ve ever seen, but it does a great job of conveying the story.

Loved: I love it when a comic book writer takes an existing character or archetype.  Some great moments were when the Plutonian first appeared and when his girlfriend finds out that he is actually the Plutonian.  Now, by the third book, there is a character strong enough to compete with Plutonian, we find out that the Plutonian is behind some of the worst tragedies in history (but before  he went bad), and there was someone who could have stopped Plutonian’s rampage, but didn’t because she didn’t want her husband to know that she cheated on him with the Plutonian.  So many great moments in the series so far.  Plus, when Plutonian meets his former parents was a great moment.

Loathed: There isn’t much that I don’t like about this comic book, except for the hit to my wallet it will be to get all the trades released so far.
