Over at Wizards, you can get in on the D&D New Skirmish Game Playtest. You have to agree to some lawyer terms, but it looks like a very solid game. Having played a bunch of Dungeons and Dragons Miniatures, I’m excited about the new game.
Some initial thoughts:
- Bands are themed, which I think improves the game over DDM.
- At the start, you create a band out of your creatures and the rest are put in reserve, where they can be purchased with gold. I think that’s an interesting approach, which seems inspired from Dreamblade.
- You build the map from tiles. The tiles themselves look pretty interesting. They got rid of this in a revision of DDM, but I always liked this approach, it just took too long. I’d like to see if it’s gotten quicker with the new tiles.
- All the creatures can do melee attacks, but special attacks require cards that you play from your hand.
I think it could be a really interesting game, and seems to be very D&D. Hopefully I’ll be able to find someone to try this out with me.
