I’m a big fan of indie comic books. The freedom they give for the writer to create and write the story that he or she wants, not beholden to continuity or sales numbers can give readers an amazing experience. However, I am well aware that writers and artists have to eat, and there’s only so much of a market for black and white comics sold in only a few comic book stores.
So I’m glad that the major comic book companies have their non-continuity imprints, Icon being one of them. Eb Brubaker has written for a number of well known comic books, Batman and Daredevil among them, but I’m glad he’s able to tell stories here that can be free of the baggage that comes with those titles.
Incognito is a great anti – super hero book, with some excellent noir elements. The first series told the story of a super villain in the witness protection program that found himself starting to do good deeds. Many twists later, he is now in this new series working as a superhero with the government.
I love comic books that deconstruct what it means to be a hero in a mask, and this is one of the best at that. The heroes are given appropriately pulpy names, and the you can never tell if the main character is truly a good guy deep down, or if he’s just trying to survive.
Highly recommend this series.
