Audiographs: May Erlewine – Down in the Valley

He paused, leaning on his rake.  The late autumn sun beat down on his forehead, the sweat dripping slowly down the back of his neck.  He took off his crumpled, wide-brimmed hat and fanned himself for a brief moment.  In the distance he heard the bells welcoming all to worship, but he hadn’t been there for over two years.  Not since Marge passed.

He bent back to his work, hoping to clear his lawn of the downed leaves.   It was on days like this he missed Marge the most.  The yard work was never as hard when she was around.  As he wiped his brow with his shirt sleeve, he notice his neighbor Ed watching him.

“Forgot my reading glasses.  Came back to get him,” Ed said in lue of a greeting.

“Yep,” he replied, and went back to work.

“Why don’t you come with me?” Ed asked. The sounds of singing reached his ears.  He paused again and looked at Ed.

“Haven’t felt the urge.”He looked down at the rake in his hands.

“It’ll be here when you return, your work.  We need you with us.  All are welcome.”

He nodded, and set down his rake.  Together, they walked down the valley road.
